The Advantage of Chlorine Gas

Swimming pool water needs to be chemically treated to keep it safe and appealing. Chlorine is the chemical of choice because it is the most effective in consistently destroying harmful bacteria, pathogens, algae and other organic material in water. There is no process available in the world that is as completely effective as chlorination.

Typically, swimming pools are treated with chlorine compounds - liquids, tablets, granules or powders that are formulated by mixing pure chlorine (a gas) and other salts and solids. When added to water, they dissolve back into their original forms, releasing the chlorine component to disinfect your pool. The remaining salts and other inert ingredients then accumulate in the pool water, along with other normally occurring dissolved solids. This increase in total dissolved solids (TDS) is commonly called "hardening" - the buildup of inorganic material in your water.

There is only one method of chlorination that does not promote the hardening of your pool water - the use of pure gas chlorine. Gas chlorine does not add any unwanted solids to your pool; and is the most efficient way to sanitize your pool water. It is the premier water sanitizing agent. Not only does it effectively kill algae and bacteria, but it quickly destroys other compounds in the water that cause unpleasant odors, and skin and eye irritation. (Details follow under "Eye Irritation - Its Not the Chlorine")

Professional application is another advantage. Pure gas chlorine can only be used by specially qualified service firms who maintain an EPA registration for their product, and an EPA license on their repackaging facilities. Gas chlorine cannot be purchased "over-the counter" by either pool owners or non-qualified pool services. The specially qualified firms that are allowed to use gas chlorine in residential swimming pools provide the pool owner a service that includes balancing of pH and alkalinity in addition to chlorination. This total chemical care package relieves the pool owner from having to handle and store pool sanitizing chemicals in or around their homes.

Sophisticated Chemistry that Works for You
Pure gas chlorination works for you in many ways. First, it keeps your pool safe and sanitary in the same efficient manner that makes it the number one water purifier in the world. Second, it is a stand-alone sanitizer and oxidizer, proving very effective at keeping your pool free from the buildup of undesirable bacteria infestations and algae blooms. Third, it greatly reduces the rate at which your pool water hardens since it does not contain additional compounded materials. Not only does this mean your pool water looks and tastes better, it also may reduce the frequency of draining to reduce excessive hardness levels. Fourth, gas chlorine, as a very potent oxidizer, can actually improve water clarity and extend filter cycles as it readily destroys impurities and bacteria that would otherwise cloud water and clog filters.

You can see that there are tangible benefits and cost savings over the long term for the pool that is professionally treated with gas chlorine. The proven performance of this sophisticated chemistry does work for you.

Effective Chlorination
The chemistry of chlorination of pool water is still a widely misunderstood process. Time after time, many people mistakenly blame chlorine for a multitude of problems - from eye irritation to green hair. One of the most common problems in water treatment is the fact that most people, including some pool services, simply don't add enough chlorine to their water. This stems from the myth that "too much chlorine" will cause problems. Pool owners will often undertreat their pools, and then have to resort to expensive treatments to correct algae infestations, cloudy water, or unsanitary conditions that result. Higher chlorine residuals are not harmful, as most pool owners are led to believe. In fact, higher chlorine residuals often eliminate most pool chemical complaints!

Effective chlorination requires the addition of enough chlorine to do the immediate job of sanitizing and oxidizing, and then to provide enough residual to satisfy future demand. Gas chlorine provides effective chlorination. Of course, no water treatment is complete without adequate filtration, circulation, and maintenance.

GAS CHLORINE FACTS

  • Gas chlorine sanitizes most of our residential water supplies and protects drinking water from deadly diseases like cholera and typhoid
  • All chlorine compounds (bleach, tablets, powders, etc.) are made from gas chlorine
  • Chlorine is not a synthetic product - it is one of earth's most common and useful naturally occurring elements, and it is the building block for the modern chemical industry
  • Gas chlorine has one of the finest safety records in the chemical industry
  • Gas chlorine is available only to pool service companies that meet strict registration and licensing requirements, which are not necessary for other chlorine products - a major reason for gas chlorine's outstanding safety record

Safe, Professional and Proven Water Treatment
The use of gas chlorination in swimming pools dates back to the mid 1950's and was introduced by chemists and chemical engineers who sought to solve their own backyard pool problems. This unique service has grown and today hundreds of thousands of pool owners enjoy the benefits of pure gas chlorination, provided by specially qualified firms throughout the nation.

The system is safe and approved by the Federal EPA, which issues the product registration and site licences for these service companies. In addition to other state and local agencies, the system is also recognized by the Chlorine Institute, and the National Spa and Pool Institute (NSPI), as well as other pertinent pool industry trade associations.
